CPB Contractors has this week placed the finishing touches on one of Australia’s largest aviation projects, the New Parallel Runway at Brisbane Airport.
Delivered as a joint venture with BMD Constructions for Brisbane Airport Corporation as ‘Skyway’, the project included construction of a 3.3km (60m wide) main runway, a 12km taxiway system and airfield infrastructure including navigational aids, airfield lighting, utilities and signage, operational roads, security controls and fencing, and approximately 300 hectares of airfield landscaping.
The runway, which has been eight years in the making, will open on July 12. While there will not be as many aircraft movements due to COVID-19, the runway will play a crucial role for future demand and recovery of the city and state.
CPB Contractors General Manager Queensland and Papua New Guinea Vince Sanfilippo said the project, which operated at more than 3.2 million workhours LTI free, delivered enormous local benefits for the industry.
“Throughout the life of the project we inducted more than 3700 people and engaged over 300 subcontractors with 90 percent of those businesses from South East Queensland,” Vince said.
"Our team delivered this complex project on time and within budget for our clients, while meeting high safety and performance standards, and high-quality airport construction standards”.
