Christchurch Hospital's Waipapa completed

Patients now using the new facilities

Patients are now being cared for in the new Waipapa building at the Christchurch Hospital in New Zealand. The Waipapa building (formerly known as the Acute Services Building) is the largest hospital project ever delivered in New Zealand and has been constructed to stringent seismic requirements.

CPB Contractors delivered the new facility for New Zealand’s Ministry of Health. The Waipapa building includes:

  • A new emergency department and operating theatres
  • An expanded intensive care unit
  • Children’s facilities
  • A state-of-the-art radiology department
  • A rooftop helipad

The new Child Health spaces feature a beautiful new patient playground, the Matatiki Hub, and an Activity Room. Parents and carers will also appreciate having additional beds in each room.

Canterbury District Health Board’s Chief of Child Health Dr Clare Doocey says the new spaces in Waipapa are amazing and the move to the new facility is really going to benefit young patients.

“The new spaces are light, bright and colourful. The atmosphere is completely different to our previous wards in Christchurch Hospital and will be very pleasant and calming for families staying with us.

“There has been an incredible amount of planning that has gone into the relocation of our wards. What makes it all worth it is the smiles on patients’ faces today as they were whisked away from the existing Christchurch Hospital to the brand new sparkling wards of Waipapa,” says Dr Doocey.

Haematology patient Tane Loper was one of the first patients to make the move to Waipapa, and once he settled into his new room he spoke about how impressed he was with the new space. “It’s got all the mod-cons and is very tidy, it’s awesome. The best thing about it is the view from the rooms, they’ve done well designing it."

Paul Corbett, CPB Contractors New Zealand General Manager, said that delivering new and upgraded health infrastructure is a core capability for CPB Contractors.

“Everyone involved in the delivery of this project is very proud of the outcome. Waipapa is an outstanding health facility that will be valued and appreciated by the community for many years to come. Congratulations and thanks to everyone who has been involved in this project.”
