Two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are currently carving out a 5.5-kilometre section of the Sydney Metro - Western Sydney Airport, Station Boxes and Tunnelling Works.
The TBMs – Eileen and Peggy – have embarked on their journey from the Airport Business Park Station site and will eventually connect to the Aerotropolis Station site. Eileen and Peggy, the twin TBMs, have been named after two local women who each made significant contributions to their communities.
TBM Eileen honours its namesake Eileen Cammack OBE. Eileen was the first woman Mayor of Penrith and only the second female mayor in Australia at the time. She also established the first pathology service in Penrith and the first pathology laboratory at Nepean District Hospital.
TBM Peggy pays tribute to Peggy Kelman OBE. Peggy was an aviation pioneer and one of the first few in Australia with an aircraft and a licence to fly. Peggy was also the first pilot to fly from England to Australia whilst pregnant.
CPB Contractors is delivering the Sydney Metro - Western Sydney Airport, Station Boxes and Tunnelling Works for the Australian and NSW Governments in a joint venture.
The project involves the design and construction of 9.8 kilometres of twin tunnels and excavations for stations at St Marys, Orchard Hills, Airport Terminal Station, Aerotropolis Station and service facilities at Bringelly and Claremont Meadows.
